SCSS  Compass
and Orienteering

Overview

There are multiple ways to go about presenting the material here.  First and foremost, you need to understand this information is intended to go along with in-person instruction and this can also be used as a summary review for preparing for competition.

Effective use of maps is critical, and so I have separated the map topics into six sections.  Many of the important topics overlap and so there's repeated information where appropriate.  But I strongly suggest you start by learning about maps.

Keep in mind the ultimate goal of land navigation:

To know where you are and how to get to where you want to go.

Maps are your foundation.

Once you have a working knowledge of maps, you can proceed to the next phase, "How do I get where I want to go?" or "I'm lost, where am I?"  Part of this next phase is transitioning from "map world" to "real world" and vise versa.  The remaining topics cover that aspect.
